Niche Market Dry Bean Variety Trial
Dry bean variety trials at WSU Vancouver Research and Extension Center have shown that dozens of bean varieties can be successfully grown in western Washington. These reports include our variety trial research findings.

To test dry bean varieties and advanced breeding lines for suitability in different environments, we conduct on-farm trials. This is a report of our current on-farm variety trial research findings.

There are many varieties of dry beans in addition to varieties in the major market classes (e.g., pintos, navy, kidney, northern). Niche market is a general term to describe varieties that are not in the major market classes . This publication provides a photo and a description of several dry bean varieties that were successfully grown in western Washington. We have also provided additional information regarding the consumption of many dry beans as green beans.
Based on our work at WSU Vancouver Research and Extension Center, we have developed plans for small-scale bean threshing and cleaning equipment that is cost effective for small-scale farmers.
This marketing brochure is designed for farmers to give to their customers. The brochure provides nutrition, cooking, serving and storage information for the home consumer. Through increased consumer knowledge, farmers have more opportunities to market their products.
Nutrition experts at Michigan State University examined more than 25 years of research involving dry beans and various health issues and have issued a four-part report titled "Eat Beans to Improve Your Health." Summaries of the research and a complete copy of the report on this web site.
